Discover Sugrue's Pub & Eatery

Just off the busy stretch at 1200 Hwy 17 S, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582, United States, Sugrue's Pub & Eatery feels like the kind of place you stumble into once and then keep coming back to. I first walked in on a humid summer evening after a long day near Cherry Grove Beach, looking for something casual but satisfying. What I found was more than a quick bite-it was that rare mix of Irish pub charm and laid-back coastal energy that defines North Myrtle Beach dining at its best.

The location is easy to spot along Highway 17, and there’s plenty of parking, which is a small but important detail in a busy tourist town. Inside, the atmosphere leans into that warm and welcoming vibe you expect from a proper pub. Dark wood accents, friendly bartenders, and a mix of locals and vacationers give the place an authentic feel. It’s lively without being overwhelming, and that balance is harder to achieve than most people realize.

Now, let’s talk about the menu. It’s built around classic pub fare with an Irish twist, but you’ll also find American comfort food staples. On my first visit, I went straight for the fish and chips. The batter was crisp and golden, not greasy, and the cod inside stayed flaky and tender. According to the National Fisheries Institute, seafood consumption in the U.S. continues to rise each year, and quality preparation is what separates average from memorable. Here, the kitchen clearly understands proper frying temperatures and timing, because the texture was spot on.

Another standout is the shepherd’s pie. It’s hearty, layered with seasoned ground meat, vegetables, and creamy mashed potatoes browned just enough on top. Comfort food like this isn’t just about flavor; it’s about technique. The balance between seasoning and richness matters. Too much salt or too thick a mash can ruin it. In this case, the dish felt thoughtfully prepared, not rushed.

If you’re more in the mood for something casual, their burgers and wings hold their own. I’ve visited with a group of friends during football season, and we ordered a spread of appetizers-loaded nachos, mozzarella sticks, and traditional buffalo wings. The wings had that ideal combination of crispy skin and juicy interior, and the sauce clung well without drowning the flavor. The bar offers a rotating selection of draft beers, including Irish staples and regional craft brews, which pairs perfectly with game nights.

Reviews from regular patrons often mention the staff, and I can see why. Service makes or breaks a restaurant experience. On my last visit, our server managed a packed dining room with calm efficiency. Orders came out in a timely manner, drinks were refilled without us asking, and questions about menu ingredients were answered confidently. The hospitality industry consistently highlights that attentive service is one of the top drivers of customer loyalty, and this spot clearly understands that principle.

From an expert perspective, what works here is consistency. Restaurants in tourist-heavy areas sometimes struggle with maintaining quality during peak seasons. However, even during a crowded weekend in July, the food quality and service at this pub held steady. That reliability builds trust. While menus can change and specials rotate, the core offerings remain dependable.

It’s also worth noting that while the space isn’t overly large, it’s well organized. Seating is arranged to accommodate couples, families, and larger groups. If you’re planning a visit during high season, calling ahead might be wise, especially for dinner.

In a coastal town filled with seafood shacks and chain restaurants, this Irish-inspired eatery stands out by delivering consistent comfort food, solid drinks, and genuinely friendly service. Whether you’re a local looking for your regular hangout or a visitor searching for a relaxed dinner after the beach, this Highway 17 gem offers a dining experience that feels both authentic and easygoing.

  • Had an early lunch here today Sept 15th. Place has a local bar feel. But the place is clean and well kept. The bartender/server was great. She was personable and proactively attentive. I had the meatball/Parm. My wife had the country fried steak sandwich. Both were superb. I had the pasta salad side - also very good. The dessert cheesecake fried rolls were soooo good. Will definitely be making this one of my goto establishments.

  • Great live music venue. Good food, reasonably priced. Got the meatball sub, loved it! The gourmet egg rolls are unique and worth a try, especially the dessert egg rolls. This is a locals favorite for years, so you know the food is good, service always friendly and a good value. Some great bands also play there!

  • We got takeout burgers from here a year ago and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. Finally got to come back today and, yep, the food was just as good as I remember. Buffalo dip: Great. Not spicy, if that’s your thing, but I really enjoyed it. Pita chips: Fantastic. Burger: Delicious. Most trustworthy burger I’ve had in a while. Fries: Also Great. Drinks: idk what the bartender guy made me but it was awesome and accomplished its mission. Thank you, Guy. Vibe: fun, very friendly, good music 10/10 experience

  • Came here last year for karaoke and had a blast, so came back again this year while down here. Food and service was good even though they got slammed with the crowd from softball. Had a great time singing with Jessy!!
